He Los Angeles Lakers extended their winning streak to five games on Wednesday night, edging out the San Antonio Spurs 118–116 at Crypto.com Arena. And while Luka Doncic once again delivered a superstar-level stat line, what stood out most was his commitment on the defensive end — an area he has been heavily scrutinized for throughout his career.
Doncic controlled the game with 35 points, 9 rebounds, 13 assists, 5 steals, and 2 blocks, overwhelming the Spurs with his shot-making and playmaking. Even his own teammates, including LeBron James and Austin Reaves, were visibly stunned on the bench during some of his highlight sequences.
But this time, the conversation inside the locker room wasn’t just about his offense.
Lakers Notice a Shift in Luka’s Defensive Engagement
For years, opposing teams routinely targeted Doncic on defense — viewing him as a weak point. But this season, and particularly in this game, that narrative is shifting.
Rui Hachimura made that clear after the win.
“I’ve never seen him like that. He’s trying to be more aggressive on defense, and that’s exactly what we need from him.”
Hachimura contributed 15 points on efficient shooting, but he emphasized that Doncic’s defensive intensity was just as important as his offensive brilliance.
JJ Redick Credits Defense for the Win
Head coach JJ Redick echoed the praise, noting that Doncic’s defensive activity has quietly been strong all season.
“There wasn’t matador defense. He guarded. And that was huge. Our fourth-quarter defense is the reason we won the game.”
Under Redick’s system, Los Angeles has increasingly emphasized team defense, and Doncic’s improved conditioning and mobility have allowed him to stay engaged longer.
A New-Level Luka?
At 26 years old and in his second season with the Lakers, Doncic appears to be reaching a new level of two-way play. He reported to camp in significantly better shape, leading to improved stamina and defensive focus.
He is currently averaging career-highs:
- 40.0 points
- 11.0 rebounds
- 9.2 assists
- 2.0 steals
If Doncic continues defending like this, the Lakers become not just dangerous — but legitimate title favorites.
The Lakers now prepare for a five-game road trip, beginning Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks.
