JJ Redick did not hide his concern.
As the Los Angeles Lakers continue to search for offensive consistency, their head coach admitted there are moments where he’s unsure what more can be done. Despite winning four of their last six games, offensive execution remains a persistent issue.
Speaking after the Lakers’ 128–121 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, Redick pointed to repeated breakdowns in structure and focus on offense.
“I don’t know what else to do. It’s just like that’s happening so consistently right now,” Redick said, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
“I chalk it up to the holidays.”
Miscommunication hurting offensive flow
Redick revealed that the Lakers’ struggles stem from basic issues: plays not being executed properly — and sometimes not being run at all. Earlier in the week, the coach had already called out an anonymous player for not knowing the defensive scheme, and similar lapses are now showing up offensively.
The result has been an offense that looks disorganized for long stretches, even with elite talent on the floor.
Stars carry the load against Memphis
Against the Grizzlies, the Lakers leaned heavily on their stars to secure the win.
- Luka Dončić: 34 points, 8 assists
- LeBron James: 31 points, 6 assists
The duo’s shot-making and playmaking proved enough to overcome Memphis, but Redick made it clear that relying solely on individual brilliance is not a sustainable formula.
LeBron praises Doncic connection
One moment symbolized what the Lakers’ offense can be at its best. Dončić connected with James on a long pass from near half-court during the first half, setting the tone early.
After the game, James praised his chemistry with the Lakers’ star guard.
“One of the best quarterbacks, and I’m a pretty good receiver,” James said.
“It’s my job to not allow the defense to break that up or steal the ball. He put it right on target and made it a lot easier for me.”
Redick watched the exchange closely, viewing it as a glimpse of how fluid the Lakers’ offense can be when timing and focus are aligned.
Still searching for consistency
Despite the win, the Lakers have lost four of their last six games, and offensive execution remains an unresolved concern heading into the rematch with Memphis on Sunday.
With Dončić and James setting the standard, Redick’s challenge now is getting the rest of the roster to match that level of precision, discipline, and focus — especially as the season grinds on.
For now, the Lakers will look to build momentum, even as their coach openly acknowledges the urgency of fixing an offense that still feels out of sync.
