Adou Thiero Impresses in G League Debut as South Bay Lakers Earn Fourth Win

Rookie guard Adou Thiero returned from injury and delivered a standout performance in his G League debut, offering encouraging signs that he could earn real NBA minutes with the Lakers later this season.

The Los Angeles Lakers recently welcomed 2025 second-round selection Adou Thiero back into action, as the high-energy guard made his G League debut with the South Bay Lakers after recovering from offseason knee surgery. Thiero had missed the season’s opening stretch with a knee hyperextension, but was activated during Los Angeles’ recent victory over the Milwaukee Bucks and quickly assigned to South Bay to regain rhythm and conditioning.

While the organization does not expect Thiero to become a full-time contributor in the NBA rotation immediately, the 21-year-old already boasts a compelling mix of athleticism, defensive instincts and strong rim finishing, making him the type of player who could develop into a rotation piece faster than the conventional second-round timeline.

Strong debut performance

Thiero started Friday night’s matchup against the Santa Cruz Warriors alongside fellow prospects Bronny James, Christian Koloko, Nick Smith Jr. and Drew Timme — and wasted no time making an impact. Thiero finished the night with:

  • 19 points
  • 4 rebounds
  • 3 steals
  • 5-of-9 shooting
  • In just 19 minutes of play

His scoring efficiency and activity on both ends stood out immediately, especially considering his limited minutes and recent return from injury.

Thiero’s production helped South Bay secure another victory and improve to 4–1 on the season, with several teammates also turning in notable games. Still, the rookie guard’s assertive performance was arguably the biggest takeaway of the night.

A skillset the Lakers may need

The main roster Lakers continue to search for consistent wing defense, transition energy and disruptive on-ball pressure, and Thiero’s profile checks all three boxes. The team has struggled up and down the floor in transition play and has shown defensive inconsistency — issues that could limit their postseason ceiling if left unaddressed.

Thiero may not be the immediate answer, but continued performances like this could force the coaching staff to give him a real look later in the season. With development time in the G League and increased conditioning after his injury rehab, Thiero could gradually carve out opportunities on the NBA court.

One step at a time

For now, the South Bay assignment will give Thiero the reps he needs after missing significant time, but the early signs are encouraging. If his strong play continues, it would not be surprising to see Thiero earn spot minutes with the Lakers before the regular season ends, especially given the team’s needs and his early efficiency.
