The Los Angeles Lakers made another developmental move this week, assigning guard Bronny James back to the South Bay Lakers in the G League. The rookie guard had recently enjoyed rotation minutes — including his first NBA start — but the franchise opted to give him more consistent playing time in South Bay.
Staying positive and focused
Following South Bay’s win on Friday, James made it clear that the move was not discouraging, but instead something he sees as part of his professional journey.
“I’m coming down here with an open mind. I’m not going down here with a negative mindset like I’m being sent down to a lesser level,” James said. “I’m just going down and trying to better myself every game and every play.”
James emphasized that the G League exists to develop young talent, and he intends to take full advantage of the extra touches, reps, and opportunities to run an offense.
A different role in South Bay
In the NBA rotation, James has largely filled a defensive and energy-focused role — a responsibility that head coach JJ Redick has praised, especially for his on-ball pressure.
But in the G League, James takes on more primary-ball-handler duties, giving him the chance to:
- Initiate offense
- Make reads as a facilitator
- Choose his scoring spots
- Grow into a lead-guard role
Learning from a mentor
James also credited veteran guard Gabe Vincent as someone he consistently leans on for guidance.
“He’s kind of a mentor for me… He plays with a chip and does whatever it takes to win. I go up to him all the time in practice asking questions.”
While Vincent reclaimed his rotation spot after returning from injury, his presence provides James with a model for how a role player can succeed at the NBA level.
A strong first performance
In his first South Bay game this season, James delivered an impressive all-around performance:
- 15 points
- 4 rebounds
- 8 assists
- 3 steals
- 1 block
- 5-of-10 shooting (50%)
- 2-of-5 from three
Those numbers underline the expanded responsibilities he gets at the G League level — and the opportunities the Lakers want him to continue exploring.
Big-picture development
Assignments like this are not setbacks — they’re part of the Lakers’ plan to develop low-cost contributors for long-term depth. With Los Angeles getting healthy and a rotation returning to full strength, James’ time with South Bay offers meaningful reps that may accelerate his NBA readiness.
