Will LeBron James Truly Take on a Supporting Role with the Lakers?

As LeBron James begins his 23rd NBA season at age 40, the question arises: is he ready to transition into a secondary role as the Lakers shift toward a younger core led by Luka Dončić?

LeBron James stepped into his 23rd NBA season at age 40, extending his league record for the longest professional career in NBA history. Although still massively productive, the conversation surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers is changing. With the team’s lineup now defined and younger stars emerging, many are wondering whether LeBron is prepared to transition into a more supporting role.

When asked about his physical capacity early in the season, LeBron was direct:

“I can keep up with anybody. I don’t even understand why that has ever been a question,” he said. “Just from watching games, I already visualize how I can help the team. I still draw a lot of attention with the ball in my hands.”

Why the transition is being discussed

Several factors are contributing to the idea that LeBron may gradually shift out of the lead role:

  • Luka Dončić has emerged as the franchise face, taking over the scoring load and playmaking responsibilities in most early-season performances.
  • While LeBron remains effective, his athletic peak is naturally decreasing with age, and the team may want to preserve him for decisive moments.
  • Analysts have suggested that LeBron may be shifting toward a more strategic, selective style, contributing decisively rather than carrying the team for long stretches.
  • Austin Reaves has stepped into a larger responsibility, keeping strong averages and performing well when stars are unavailable.
  • Deandre Ayton is posting the most efficient shooting numbers of his career, giving the team a dependable inside presence.
  • Rui Hachimura is among the league’s top three-point contributors, while new additions like Jake LaRavia, Marcus Smart, and Jaxson Hayes are adding depth and lineup flexibility.

LeBron demonstrates his new impact style

LeBron’s season debut against the Utah Jazz exemplified how he can drive winning without needing to dominate the scoring column. He finished with 11 points and 12 assists, securing a double-double and helping the offense function smoothly through his vision, experience, and decision-making.

He also noted how unusual this season's start has been:

“This is the first time I’ve started a season without playing beforehand. Since I began at nine years old, I had never missed the start of a season.”

A gradual and natural transition

While LeBron is still more than capable of taking over games when necessary, the shift is expected to occur gradually, not immediately. Los Angeles could benefit from:

  • Reduced physical wear on LeBron,
  • Space for younger stars to take ownership,
  • LeBron’s leadership shining in late-game scenarios and high-stakes moments.

Rather than stepping down outright, LeBron seems poised to evolve his role over time, guiding the next generation—particularly Dončić—while still remaining a decisive force when the lights shine brightest.
