Luka Dončić is off to one of the most dominant starts in NBA history, and he only needed 12 games to rewrite the record books. The Los Angeles Lakers star currently leads the league in scoring with 34.5 points per game while showcasing improved conditioning and a sharper, more aggressive playing style in his first full season in Los Angeles.
A historic milestone in record time
Dončić vowed to treat this season differently, and the results are already remarkable. After a focused offseason that included improved conditioning and weight loss, the Slovenian guard became the fastest player in NBA history to surpass 400 points and 100 assists to open a season.
Through 12 games, Dončić sits at:
- 414 points
- 107 assists
His record-setting pace began immediately. In his first five games, he became only the third player ever to score at least 200 points to open a season, joining Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 1961 and 1962 starts, where Chamberlain posted 256 and 264 points respectively.
This run also pushed Dončić ahead of Michael Jordan, whose previous best for the first five games of a regular season stood at 197 points.
Leading the NBA in scoring
In addition to breaking new historical ground, Dončić currently sits on top of the NBA scoring leaderboard. His 34.5 average places him ahead of several top talents, including:
- Tyrese Maxey – 33.0 PPG
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – 32.2 PPG
- Giannis Antetokounmpo – 31.2 PPG
- Donovan Mitchell – 30.8 PPG
Dončić has established himself not just as the Lakers’ offensive engine, but as the early-season standout across the entire league.
