Lakers Waive Christian Koloko to Make Room for Gonzaga Star Drew Timme

The Lakers have released center Christian Koloko after officially signing former Gonzaga standout Drew Timme to a two-way contract, signaling a strategic shift in roster priorities.

The Los Angeles Lakers made a notable roster move on Monday, opting to waive Christian Koloko shortly after finalizing the signing of Gonzaga legend Drew Timme to a two-way contract. The move marks a roster shuffle designed to strengthen the team’s depth while adjusting the balance of frontcourt contributors.

NBA insider Brett Siegel reported that negotiations with Timme began on November 21, with the Lakers’ front office showing clear intent to add the accomplished collegiate big man. With only one available roster slot, Los Angeles ultimately chose to move on from Koloko to complete the transaction.

Koloko joined the Lakers in 2024 and served predominantly as a reserve during his tenure. Over 39 total appearances, he averaged 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds, managing to maximize his role when opportunities came during the 2024-25 season. While his playing time was limited, he delivered solid energy and rim protection in his rotation minutes.

Why Timme?

Timme’s impressive college résumé made him one of the most decorated players in recent NCAA history. During his four seasons at Gonzaga, he averaged:

  • 17.2 points
  • 6.7 rebounds
  • Three All-American selections
  • Two WCC Player of the Year Awards
  • Karl Malone Award winner

He arrived in the NBA in 2023 and later showcased his potential with the Brooklyn Nets. In limited regular-season action, Timme averaged 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, while also excelling in the G-League, earning Second Team honors in 2025. Before the Lakers deal, he spent time with the South Bay Lakers, already familiar with the organization’s system and expectations.

Lakers Trending Upward

Los Angeles is off to a 12-4 start in the 2025-26 season, sitting second in the Western Conference standings and riding a four-game winning streak. The strong performance has given the front office confidence to further refine the roster as they chase early-season momentum.

Up next, the Lakers host the Los Angeles Clippers on November 25 as part of NBA Cup group stage play—another opportunity to continue their fast start.

With the signing of Timme and the departure of Koloko, the Lakers are making it clear they value frontcourt versatility, scoring, and developmental upside as they push forward in the 2025-26 campaign.
